I use whatsapp very often in IPhone and understand that whatsapp is not available in IPad , is this true ? Then what equivalent apps in IPad ?

iPhone apps will run just fine on the iPad, but the display size will only be iPhone size. You can increase the display size to fit the iPad screen but the result will be pixelated.

Yes that is true that it will not work on the iPad. Whatsapp is phone number based and so only for phones. It does not run on Tablets.

You can try Beluga or KIK. There are also others. Google+ is a good alternative as well, although it doesn't have an iPad app yet, it is supposed to be coming.
