Vanishing email

A few days ago I received an email from a friend. I use Gmail. When I opened Gmail on my Ipad2 yesterday to reply the email had vanished It returned briefly but then disappeared completely. I have checked all the Gmail folders but it is nowhere to be found. I checked Gmail using my pc but of course it has completely vanished.
Is this an iPad or a Gmail problem?
Can the email be retrieved?

I have gmail setup in my iPad as exchange from they one and I had never experience this issue. Did you look in your delete folder just in case?

It sounds like GMail problem, since it is not just the iPad. GMail saves all email to the All Mail folder/lable by default, so you could try looking there.

No other ideas, at the moment.
