Using iPad Air with Apple TV?

I have an iPad Air and have just bought an Apple TV.

Ignoring the iTunes side of it I was expecting to be able to view photos and to be able to stream from my iPad to the TV via the Apple TV pod?

Can't find anyway to do this, so have I missed something or can it only stream from the iTunes?

If so would a Western Digital WD HD TV Live be a more suitable unit to have and can that be used to stream photos etc from an iPad Air and a std laptop?

Yes you can view your photos direct from your iPad using your airplay icon.
This can be found by swiping up from the bottom of the screen on your iPad.

Also here you will find the mirroring button which will let you mirror what's on your iPad screen

How can I view streaming video that is in .wmv format...

Found the Airplay icon and now the TV fully mirrors the iPad
