Hi

newbie ipad 2 owner here )
so new that it's still in it's box!

Am travelling to South Africa next week and need to know how I can go about getting micro sims etc so I can stay intouch with the folks back home.
Whole reason for getting the ipad was to be able to stay in touch, I know i should've done more research first................

Any help you can give me would be most appreciated.

Port Elizabeth is my 1st destination ;o)

Your iPad would need to be 3G enabled (not just WiFi model) to use your carrier's SIM card in it. Honestly, the internet charges while roaming internationally are quite extensive. With the amount of data that the iPad could use (or any tablet/smartphone) relatively quickly, I would check with your carrier to see the best plan that they offer and if you could get away with it, I would recommend using WiFi as much as possible.
