Sync contacts resets all to default ringtone

I run Windows 7 on PC and MS Outlook is my "master" file for contacts and calendar. Sync to/from my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S works successfully except that all custom ringtones are reset back to default every time I sync which is more than a little annoying! Can anybody tell me if this is a bug or if I have done something wrong in the sync process?

Are you syncing your iPhone 4s/iPad via iTunes on your PC? This problem seems to be widespread judging by the amount of results in google. I guess it is Outlook which reverts back the default ringtones upon sync...

Yes, I do sync using iTunes on PC which I hate with a passion! Is there any other way to sync then?

iTunes on your computer is the only way to sync your iOS devices.
