I opened itunes on my PC and chose to download a free app. It asked me for my password twice and then it had me set up 3 security questions and an alternate email address.

This has never happened to me before. Is this normal or should I be worried about something?

Apple is increasing security in iTunes and in the App store. What you experienced is normal and will be extended to all users in time.

How about a consistent message that there is no connection to the I-Tunes Store?

I seen this question and thought oh wow that just happened to me. I w installing an app and was asked these questions. At first I wasn't sure to do it but did anyway. Nothing can be done anyway until you verify that the info you gave is verified from an email.
