Try Handbrake; it's a free program that most Members use.

Dear Tim Spracklen, Thanks for your tip. However I have now used "Nero" to recode the video files so that I can now view them on my iPad 2. That was my reason for my query. Nero had been installed on my PC last year but I had never used or understood it or at least some of it until now.
Sorry to be so inexpert in using this excellent forum-old age takes its toll.

Nero is rubbish; I think you're much better off downloading Handbrake to try it; it's easy to use!
