Removing a desktop icon

I know how to reposition icons. But I've forgotten how to remove them. Would appreciate reminder. ...wdc

Do you mean: delete apps?

Tap and hold until the apps start to wiggle, tap the small x that appears. Done!

iOS unlike Android does not allow you to delete the icon alone. As J.A. says, the only way to remove an icon is by deleting the entire a App.
