How do I get a book from my sony ereader library onto my new ipad ?

Chances are, you don't.
Like most eBook stores Sony places DRM (Digital Rights Management) on their books. This makes them incompatible with all the other ebook apps and devices. As far as I know Sony has not supplied an app for the iPad, so there is nothing on it that will read a Sony protected ebook.
If the ebook is not copy protected, then you can probably just email it to yourself, then tap and hold on the attachment in Mail to Open In iBooks (must be installed). I'm pretty sure Sony uses the ePub standard, same as iBooks. Only the DRM is different.
