MacRumors notes that the new versions of the official Formula 1 Timing apps have gone live, just in time for the start of the season, with the first race of the year kicking off this weekend in Melbourne, Australia. The full app comes in at a very price $28.99/£19.99, which I know puts a lot of people off, but it does offer exclusive live timing, tyre information, race control messages, live text commentary, and much more. The F1 web site says that the app is designed to complement the TV viewing experience and to keep those who are not able to watch on TV up-to-date with all that is going on during the race, with all the action brought to the app in under two seconds. There’s also a live Pause facility so that you can replay the action immediately after it’s happened, and the app also has a massive database of information about the entire season.

There’s also a free, lite version of the app available, including features such as F1 news notifications that can be pushed to your home screen, session results, an event counter that counts down the time to the next session and tells you when the session is live, as well as optional notifications to remind you when a session is about to start. A free race calendar is also included, plus a huge information database, with all the latest driver, team and event news.

If you’re looking for a good unofficial alternative to enhance your enjoyment of the F1 season, then F1 2012 Premium does the trick nicely.

It does sound great. I downloaded the lite version and the demo of the race telemetry is amazing. Unfortunately I don't watch most races live, so I don't think it is worth the $29 for me to buy it. Maybe I will change my mind as the season starts.

Coming from Android to the new ipad i can tell you this app is a riff off.
Okay if you cannot watch the race live then maybe its a price worth paying but if you are watching the race live you will find that sky/BBC have the times up much faster than the app can load.

And both TV channels offer a car tracker or full timing on the red button.
And for those who are sky viewers can look at the timing or the car tracker on their ipad/iphone while watching the main event on tv.
For me Ă‚ÂŁ20 a year is way too much.
