How do I turn off the annoying notifications, that pop up when I get a tweet or email?

Go to your Settings app. Look for the line "Notifications" and select it. The top section will be those apps you've elected to show in the Notification Center while the bottom section will be all others (that have notifications). Find the app for which you have concerns and select it. The next page will give you options to turn off the various alert styles and badges.
