I reckon I’ll wait for the Public Betas, as it’s such a massive upgrade and by then a lot of the early ‘bugs’ may have been ironed out.

Control center has been completely redesigned.
The calculator was redesigned so that turning the iPhone to landscape mode no longer gets you the scientific calculator, you have to manually tap a button.

Since updating to iPadOS 16.7.10 and iOS 16.7.10, neither my iPad nor my iPhone can send email. The error message says incorrect name or password. Same problem with any of my email accounts. Both devices worked the day before, and still receive mail normally. Mail works fine on my iMac using the same credentials.

If you have an old device, you might want to skip this one. I guess I'm out of luck until the next update.

Unlike receiving email, many email clients require authentication to send. It's often a different server address. It sounds like the update messed up your authentication token, password, or whatever method they use today.

The update itself probably isn't the issue, just your email settings/authentication.

Assuming you are using a modern email account like Google, iCloud, or Hotmail, you can try removing and re-adding your account in Settings > Mail > Accounts. Don't worry about the pop-up that says it will delete info. That is only on the iPad. It will not go to the email server and delete the online information, When you re-add the account it will sync the information back to the ipad.

Or you can just try signing out/into those accounts. That might work.

If you have an older account, or one from your ISP, you should first make sure it is IMAP or Exchange. The POP3 servers do not keep all your email on the server. At least not normally.

I wonder why it's affecting both devices, unless their respective updates share the same bug. In 8 years of OS updates, this never happened before.

I've tried everything short of deleting the accounts. It's such a massive PITA to type anything on the iPhone SE, since it's too stupid to let me rotate to landscape for a usable keyboard size. No, rotation is not locked.

I deleted my gmail account. I've been jumping through hoops for over an hour, and nothing works. Selecting Google for the new account ends up with an error with no info about what went wrong. Selecting "other" isn't working either, using mail.google.com for incoming and smtp.gmail.com for outgoing. It appears to be saved, but checking for mail fails after timing out. Mail app did not repopulate from the IMAP server. Trying to send mail throws an error "sender address is invalid." Now I have no email.

I guess I'll have to ditch apple mail and try the gmail app.

I'm sorry that did not help. I don't have anything old enough to be on iOS/iPadOS 16, so I can't test myself. I do know that my gmail is still working on the similar security update for iOS/iPadOS 17.

I did a quick search for problems with the update, and could not find any related to gmail. Few at all, actually. If it is a widespread issue, or even moderately spread, I'll expect some news of it soon.

You might search through google's gmail support pages and see if they have any suggestions for iOS Mail users.
