I have heard of Apple TV, but never really knew what it was. Reading the set up explained much. I'll have to check out purchasing Apple TV. Is there only one type? Should I purchase directly from apple?

The best way is to buy from an Apple store or an authorized reseller such as Best Buy or Walmart. You can also purchase one from the Apple online store. There have been several generations of Apple TV, with the current version being the third generation model.
