On the iPad 2 there is a SIM tray access on the side at the top left when holding the iPad in portrait orientation. It has a small round hole above it ( for the SIM tray remover pin). It is the same corner as the headphone jack.

If it does not have this, then it is wifi only.

I assumed from your description that you knew you had a wifi only model?

I believe it should say so on the box. On the back, small sticker with the barcoded on it. On the top is the description. Mine says "iPad 2 Wi-Fi 3G 16GB Black". Mine is the wifi/cellular version.

The wifi only will drop the 3G and just say Wi-Fi.

Australia! Yes, most mobile providers have portable wifi/3G options, so shop around. Telstra is probably best for 4G, and the most reliable 3G, but if you're in a good metro area, you can check out both Vodafone and Optus options.

These are good portable options, and you can usually share the wifi with a number of devices, if needed.

If your just using it around the home, then hopefully you have a wifi modem with your home Internet you can connect to.

DHewson has great advice with the 3G/4G options available in Australia......

I have had both a Telstra and Optus sim and IMO the Telstra service is much better. I wouldn't even bother with Vodaphone though.

As your iPad is still boxed you could always just return it and upgrade to a cellular one if you like. Apple does have a 14 day window in which you may exchange your purchases. This window of opportunity has been extended with Christmas approaching and iPads bought now can be exchanged up until 7th January. You must have all the boxing to do this though. Just thought I'd let you know about this option too. Enjoy!

Good point. The exchange policy would only apply is bought directly from Apple, but if you have not opened it, you may be able to return it to your place of purchase. I'm sure they want your extra cash to upgrade!

I've also enquired at Myers and David Jones, they will also exchange but these must be unopened.
