Can I back up my iphone and Ipad up to the same machine?

All I have done is back up my ipad to my desktop. and no backup with the iphone. But what would happen if I plugged my phone into the machine with Itunes? Would it back up the Iphone but delete the prior backup with the Ipad?

You can back up multiple iDevices to the same PC. Just name them differently. Besides, iTunes can immediately tell the diff between an iPad and an iPhone, from my experience.
