AV adapter HDMI

Bought a AV HDMI adaptor and a HDMI to HDMI cable. Hooked it up to my iPad 2 and the TV. Selected the correct input and I get a message "device not recognized" what can I do to get it to work?

Well first I would check on another tv, maybe it's having an issue picking up the signal?, check the cable, has the av hdmi adapter been used before so you know it's working? I've just ordered one off eBay from china, hope mine is not too difficult to get working now.

Not clear whether the message was on the TV or IPad. If on the TV, more likely a dodgy adapter or cable. If the iPad, I'd go with a dodgy apapter.
