Macworld reports today on AT&T's earnings call which took place this Thursday, during which it revealed that it had activated 400, 000 to 500, 000 3G iPads in its second quarter. AT&T made particular note of the fact that many of these activations were for businesses, saying that a "surprising" number of businesses were asking the company about the iPad.

Macworld says that businesses being so eager to become early iPad adopters is in contrast to the iPhone's first few months, when, it says, most businesses considered the iPhone to be more of an entertainment gadget in comparison to the Blackberry, which was thought to be more "professional" at the time. That all changed, of course, over time, but it's certainly interesting to compare and contrast the different approach that businesses are taking to each device.

AT&T's comments on Thursday also bear up the previously reported comments from Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who said earlier in the week that 50 percent of Fortune 500 companies were either using or testing the iPad. AT&T adds that many companies are considering using iPads as potential laptop replacements.

The company I work for bought 4 - they were for the owner, and 2 of his friends to play with, watch movies on the plane, etc. The 4th was for IT to be able to support the other 3.
