Artwork in Avatars

Can we use famous or not so famous works of art created by others as avatars?

(I understand the decorum requirements.)

I apologize for this additional post. I'm asking the question on using a work of art as an avatar because there's an RC Gorman (an American artist) reproduction I was thinking of using.
