A news story on Forbes looks into various reports about a new FCC filing for a new Apple TV (version 3, 2), in which source code for the new version’s CPU could possibly contain a clue to the next iPad mini having a Retina display. Basically it’s all down to a new System on a Chip (SoC), referred to as A5XR2, which is mentioned in the source code, which is, apparently, a smaller version of the chip inside the current Apple TV. On the surface of it, very routine news, but Forbes writes that Instapaper founder Marco Arment, who often has interesting and informed views to share on such topics, has written that he thinks this new chip is actually for a Retina display version of the iPad mini. He goes on to say that while he thinks it will also be used in a refresh of the Apple TV, this will primarily be a test run on a “low-volume†product prior to using it in the much more “high-volume†Retina iPad mini. Interesting theory! We’ll have to wait a little while longer to find out if it’s true!
