AppleInsider reports today that according to a new chart published by Statista, Apple sold more watches in Q4 2017 than the entire Swiss watch industry.
Statista used Apple Watch shipment estimates recently published by research firm Canalys as the basis for its chart, whereby it compared them with official shipment figures from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, which encapsulates all watch exports produced in Switzerland, not just for a particular manufacturer.
The result is that Statista’s chart shows that there were an estimated 8 million Apple Watch units shipped in Q4 2017, beating the 6.8 million Swiss watch shipments in the same period. The figures also reveal that Apple Watch shipments grew by 5 million year-on-year, or 33%, whereas Swiss watch shipments fell slightly from 7 million in Q4 2016.
However, while this is great news for Apple, when taking the whole year into account, Swiss watches still outsell Apple Watches, with 24.2 Swiss watches shipped in 2017 and 18.4 Apple Watches shipped in the same year. How long will it be before that gap starts to close, however?
