True Tone colour accuracy is a colour management feature that is currently only available on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, but according to a report on AppleInsider today, Apple has filed a just discovered patent application with the US Patent & Trade Office in which it describes the True Tone technology, saying that its ultimate aim is to have “colors appear as they would on a printed sheet of paper,” which is of course almost exactly how True Tone is now described by Apple in its promotional materials for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro as “almost like looking at a sheet of paper.”

The patent application also reveals that Apple always had intentions to expand True Tone beyond just one device, showing how any compatible display can use the technology, ranging from the Apple Watch to desktop computers such as the iMac and also possibly the iPhone. Indeed, another report this week said that the iPhone 7 will have improved ambient light sensors, and other rumours earlier in the year said that the next iPhone will have two extra sensors at the top, so it’s possible they could be involved with bringing True Tone technology to the new iPhone.
