MacRumors reports today on a new statement that was just issued by the Reform Government Surveillance Coalition, which includes Apple, along with some of the other biggest tech companies in the world, including Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, Snap, Evernote, LinkedIn, Oath, and Facebook. The coalition has been formed to lobby for the reform of surveillance laws, and in the new statement it criticises recent government moves to try to gain backdoor access into electronic devices, and advocates for strong encryption.
“We continue to believe that strong encryption helps protect the security and privacy of individuals and companies around the world,” said the statement... “We have consistently raised concerns about proposals that would undermine encryption of devices and services by requiring so-called ‘exceptional access’ for law enforcement.”
In another article on the story, ZDNet noted that this latest statement from Apple and the other tech giants comes after a WIRED article about Microsoft chief technical officer Ray Ozzie, who has called for something that he calls ‘Clear,’ which would grant law enforcement authorities access to encrypted data but with less risk to security, via a public key and a private key system.
