Is there a reason Apple made their new 12 watt power adapter in two pieces? The only thing I can think of is the wall outlet plug can be switched out with future Apple iPad accessories. Has anyone researched this, or even thought to ask the question yet?

iPad chargers have been made like this for several years. Apple sells a travel adaptor set with several different plug designs that fit the charger, just like the one that came with it.
Here's the page from the Apple online store.

This is my first iPad, Ive only had iPhone chargers before this. Why are they discriminating?

What do you mean 2 piece? They are made for the pins to swap out if you are traveling. You should get the correct pin automatically based on the country of purchase. My MacBook Air as a similar setup, but in that case, i get the plug pin and an extension.

Extension pictured.

They're not discriminating. The iPad requires a larger charger than the iPhone because of it's much larger battery. The iPhone charger isn't large enough to have replaceable plug components.

thanks for your input, but I got my answer from the first post. Other than the iPhone's I've had and the new iPad 4 I got for christmas, Ive never been a Mac consumer. The whole idea of having a detachable wall plug is a little foreign and stupid if you ask me.

Actually, my original iPhone 4 charger also has the same detachable plug (Australian). Not sure if that is a regional variance or not.

Foreign, I can understand, but definitely not stupid. I've seen other devices with switchable plugs for different regions. It is smart because the bulk of the pack is the same, and it is relatively cheap for the manufacturer to supply the relevant pin configuration only whilst the rest of the pack is the same, reducing manufacturing costs.

Sure the world would be a better place if everything was made to last forever, But its not!

True, but I'm not sure how that applies to my explanation for the removable pins.
