Again with the assuming. Here it goes. Assuming that the next generation iPad will get the much hyped retina display thing, the screen resolution should be something like 2048 x 1536 pixels. That’s a huge amount of pixels for a screen who’s only 10â€, but Apple wants to make it big this year. The recent proof for that is the leaked statement of a shadowy Apple employee who told the New York Times that the iPad 3 is being tested within the company and that it will sport a “truly amazing screenâ€.

Does this mean that coders who work on Macs to design apps for the tablet will be required to support Retina-grade graphics as well, like the independent iOS developer David Smith suggested? He finds the rumored resolution to be quite insufficient for professionals even if it would be doubling the one the previous tablet had (1024 x 768).

“I find numbers like that often hard to visualize so I did a quick graph comparing that to current Apple displays. A screen that size would be 96 pixels taller than a 27†iMac or Thunderbolt Display in landscape and 608 pixels taller in portrait,†he says. And this might have important repercussions on the whole developing act.

He thinks that Apple should not launch the Retina-capable Macs for professionals because the programmers will not be able to view 1:1 mockups or run the simulator at full size.

Smith thinks that a solution can be found with a 3840 x 2160 pixel display. This would double the pixels, include the 2048 x 1526 app mockup image and be easier to fit unto a MacBook size screen. He also thinks that Apple should starting offering Retina display equipped Mac soon.
