I have a similar thread going on another forum, and folks seem to be enjoying it, so I thought I might broach the idea here. I finally got around to digitizing about a thousand 35mm slides from vacations between 1972-85, before the dyes fade into obscurity, and some of them are potentially interesting to a broad audience. I propose each of us choose one old vacation image per day, and post it here with a brief story or caption.

Here's a shot from the month-long camping and offroading trip we took when I got out of the service in 1974. It's me in our Iron Pig (Toyota Landcruiser FJ55) in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, not even close to anything resembling a road.

Love the Beetle in the background. I wish I had a buck for every engine I have pulled out of those wee beasties. ;)

Long, long ago (;-)) I was the proud owner of a red beetle like the one on the picture. (Sigh) ;-)

That photo was taken in 1972. You couldn't swing a cat then without hitting a Beetle.

As I'm an Austrian, I don't know the expression "you couldn't swing a cat". But the imagination of it is funny. :-D

Indeed it is! The idiom "not enough room to swing a cat" has been in English usage since 1665, its apparent first instance in print, and almost certainly earlier. It's often stated as "couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting..." Presumably, both phrases fell into obscurity when the metric system removed the need for a dedicated unit of measurement equal to the length of a man's arm plus one feline. :)

Some of our vacations were scuba trips. Here's an anemone from Grand Turk, BWI:

Nice space you were living in. ;-) With a very high room number. Must have been a huge building. :-D
