Hi Mapletop - welcome to the forum! :) The new iPad Air will come w/ Wi-Fi, which may be enough if you are using your device at home on a Wi-Fi network or in places (e.g. hotels, coffee shops, etc.) where a 'free' wireless connection is available - I have an iPad 2 w/ only Wi-Fi which has worked fine for me; I'm planning to upgrade to the Air and will again just get the Wi-Fi version.

OTOH, if you want 'constant' connection to the internet (e.g. in a car or a place w/ no Wi-Fi service), then a cellular plan would be your choice - note that the device will cost more and the data plan will be yet another expense unless you can combine it w/ one that you already are using? Dave

Hi, welcome to iPF!

In addition to giradman's great advice:
If you already have a phone that supports tethering (need not be an iPhone, also works with Android,...), it's also possible to use a Wi-Fi only iPad and connect it to the phone via Bluetooth (personal hotspot). This way you don't need to pay for cellular data, as well as an iPad with Wi-Fi AND cellular. All you have to do before purchasing is to contact your carrier for information and pricing.

My experience: it works good. When you don't need to access the internet, turn off Bluetooth on both devices. It tends to drain the battery.
