Making the leap - iPad 1 to iPad 3

Greetings! I am a new member to the iPad forum and I'm looking forward to sharing information with the community.

I plan to purchase an iPad 3 in the next few months to replace my iPad 1 that I've been using for a couple of years. Here are my questions:
1. Do you recommend that I upgrade the iPad 1 currently on 4.2.1 iOS to 5.1.1 before I replace it? I've been avoiding doing the upgrade because I've read posts that the battery doesn't last as long and the iPad 1 will crash more often with the new OS version. On the other hand, I think it will be helpful to have everything on my "old" iPad backed up to the iCloud before I transition to the iPad 3.
2. I've heard that Apple will be launching a smaller iPad as their next offering, but I don't think I want a smaller device. Has anyone got a crystal ball as to when there will be another release of the standard size iPad? I bought my iPad 1 just a few months before version 2 was launched. Don't want to make that mistake again.

Thanks for listening and look forward to your response.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

I would say that most members with an iPad 1 have updated to IOS 5 and are happy that they have as there are so many new features available. Any glitches with battery performance was addressed with subsequent small updates. All apps have also been updated to run on this OS and as time goes on your iPad apps will eventually become unusable unless you do update. The crashing problems seen with an iPad 1 are to do with ram issues, the ipad1 has 256mb, the iPad 2 512mb and the new iPad has 1gb, there are steps you can do to minimize this happening though. Limiting location services, deleting your History and Cookies and closing your apps completely are all steps that will clear ram, it's just a little housekeeping which I also undertake with my ipad2 to keep it running smoothly. I would recommend doing the update and if you need guidance with this just let us know.

There is a lot of talk of a mini iPad and the guesses are saying September for it, will just have to wait and see if it's true or not. iPads have traditionally been launched in March each year and this is when I think you'll see the new one next year, well that's my opinion fwiw.
