entering home phone numbers in contacts

When entering contacts information in my Ipad 3, the area code entry makes a space after only two numbers instead of three even though most area codes are three digits. This is confusing. can it be changed?

Go to Settings > General > International, and make sure your Region Format is set for Canada.
