Wheres The Music?

Hi. I have an iPad2 with the latest software updates. The issue I'm having is that the music I'm syncing from iTunes on my computer is not showing up in the iPod app on the iPad. I see the iPad in the connected devices list in iTunes and I see the synced music on the device in iTunes and I can see that .86 gigs of storage space is used by audio files, but when I open the iPod app there is no music. I have dumped the music and resynced more than once, but no joy. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Has this always been a problem or is this a new development?

I've had the thing for a few months, but this is the first attempt at putting music on it, so I would have to say 'always'.
