Videos wont play after syncing on ipad

I have converted two tv shows that were in AVI format to Mp4 using Handbrake. I then put them in to the movies library in itunes and do a sync. when i select video on the ipad the screen goes blank and nothing happens. any suggestions what might be going wrong?

Have you successfully played mp4 videos before? Or is this the first time you've done a conversion and tried to play them?

I've had more success with oPlayer, which seems to be able to handle a wider variety of video formats.
