Hi, why not just play them on an app like GPlayer or the free version, GPlayer lite?
It plays avi and mpeg, therefore saving you time on converting

You have a lot of choices. Handbrake (free) is by far the most popular. There are many others. Search is your friend. I typed in "best iPad Video Converter" into the Google search field (top right-hand of every page) and came up with numerous threads:
