Trying to decide how to cover cost of an iPad deployment

I am teaching at a small private Christian school. Our goal is to keep education affordable so we don't have much of an IT budget. Any ideas on how to pay for a 1:1? Should the school buy the hardware or the parents? I have questions like this and more.

What happens when the kids smash them? It is all too easy to do.

The public schools in my area issue iPads/MacBook airs to all the students. I believe they have a deal set up through apple. The parents/students have to sign a user agreement that also includes replacement costs if damaged/lost/stolen. I would contact apple direct to see what they can work out.
