Tricia Duryee on All Things D has an interesting report today about how various retailers have been integrating iPads into their stores. I can remember back when the first iPad came out and some retailers such as coffee shops were very early adopters when it came to using the iPad as a cash register, for example, but according to Duryee’s report, the use of iPads in the retail sector is really burgeoning now. She notes that only last week, Lowe’s announced that it would be sending out 42,000 handheld devices to its stores in the U.S. and Canada, following on from similar announcements from Home Depot, Nordstrom, Pacific Sunwear and Urban Outfitters. At present, most of the stores are using the iPads, iPhones and iPod touches to help staff quickly find out information for customers, such as stock availability, but eventually they will also be used to take payments, once that technology is fully developed. I’m sure that plenty of us have seen iPads in use in retail settings, and Duryee describes how she recently witnessed an iPad in a small winery in Washington state that was in the initial stages of being set up to act as a cash register. In the above video, you can see just one such product that has been designed by a New Jersey firm called Global Bay to help retailers integrate iPads into their businesses. And let’s not forget of course, that Apple has recently completely revamped its own retail stores using interactive iPad displays.
