Did you install a pre release version of 4.3 like a developer beta?

Is this a brand new iPad - i.e. one that's never been used before? You always need to connect a brand-new iPad to iTunes initially, there's no way around this problem.

Is it an iPad1 or an iPad2?

What version of iTunes are you using - you need at least 10.1.

Get back to us and I'm sure Forum members will help you out. Thanks, too, to the other poster for their helpful suggestion. We'll sort this out for you.
