Non I-tunes music and video

I had tons of music albums and videos from youtube on my ipod touch which worked fantastic
so I never bothered to keep a backup copy but when I upgraded to ios 5 everything and I do
mean everything I ever put on my ipod touch which was not from I-tunes itself disappeared.
Is that normal or am I just very unlucky cos in all I had almost ten gigs of stuff just disappear ?

Unfortunately, if you've never backed the information up in iTunes - especially just before the upgrade - then yes, that data and media is gone. that's because, when you upgrade, the iPod's old firmware (and data) is wiped off when the new firmware is installed. It's put into a state as if it is brand-new, fresh-out-of-the-box. Since you didn't back it up, there was nothing in iTunes to "restore it from backup."
