No photos on computer after transfer to Ipad

Hi there

I am new to the Ipad and managed to successfully transfer photos from my computer to the Ipad through Itunes. I was dismayed to find that my computer photo folder for these particular photos is now empty but with some empty folders something to do with an Ipod (I do not have an Ipod). I expected that the photos would be copied to the Ipad and not moved. I can't find anywhere in the Ipad guide that tells me how to transfer them back,as the original photos were not taken with the Ipad. I am very confused. Can anyone help please.
