Hello All,

I found this site by chance on my quest for information about iPad's.

I am looking to buy one soon, but i don't know which one to get, i'm guessing that i should buy the latest which is the new iPad, but what is the main difference between the wi-fi and the wi-fi & cellular? And isn't there there the iPad 2 with something like a 3G, again have no idea what this is! , as you can tell i don't know a lot about computers either!

I want to be able to use my iPad at home linked up to my internet and also be able to buy a payg dongle (i know that you can't attach a dongle to the iPad so i think it will be an internet only micro sim card, if they do them!) for when i am on holiday in the uk. I don't have a posh phone and i just use my mobile for text messages and a few phone calls, but nothing else like internet or music. Although my phone is also my camera.

Any information for a newbie like me will be great.

Thanks,

Bec. :)

Hi there Bec and welcome.

I am in England and opted for the wifi iPad. I have a mifi unit from 3 which gives me a mobile wifi hotspot. As far as the difference between wifi only and wifi+4G/3G, a wifi only iPad can only connect to the Internet when in range of your router, a free wifi hotspot (like in Starbucks) or if using a wifi "dongle" like the 3 mifi. A wifi+4G/3G has a sim card slot so can access mobile Internet without the need of a wifi signal using the mobile network. Also, the wifi+4G/3G has GPS so can be used for navigation, the ifi only iPad does not have this function.

There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.

Remember, search is your friend. If you can't find the answer you need and you post a question then give as much info as you can to help members help you i.e. iPad 1 or 2, iOS version and name of app if the problem is with a specific app........and please don't forget to read the rules http://www.ipadforums.net/forum-rules-help-info/2119-forum-rules-everybody-please-read.html

These are the hacking section rules for all you jail breakers (and would be jail breakers) http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2892-hacking-section-rules-please-read.html

We also have an app for this forum. The link to download the app is: Discussion Forum for iPad Users for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

You can download the manual for your iPad here http://support.apple.com/manuals/ and in iBooks search for "iPad user guide for" and you will find free comprehensive manuals for both iOS 4 and 5.

If you have other Apple products or are interested in other Apple kit then why not join our sister forum too at http://www.appleforums.net/

:) Thankyou for that information, you are 'The Archangel'

Have looked into the mifi, but still a little baffled, so for the time being i think i will go for the latest iPad with wifi & 3g/4g, and buy a payg '3' sim.

:D
