New to this

I am new to the forum on Apple. I have an Iphone4 and Ipad 2.
I am not very proficient with Itunes.
I tried putting music on both with other programs. It works but not well.
I am most interested in having different music on each device.
Phone is 32 and pad is 64.
If anyone has advice to lead me to wipe the music completely from both and set up a library to use for both devices.
