I'm LolaK and have an iPad 2 which has recently been updated to iOS 5.1.1. On a scale of 1 - 10 about being tech savy, I'm probably about a 3.75. On that same scale about my iPad, i'm probably a 2.0 (only recently have become an every day user). I've been sitting at my PC all day (literally 10+ hours now), with my iPad plugged in, and trying to learn everything I can about it. When searching web for "uploading photos from pc to ipad icloud", so much of the information is vague and (seemingly) incomplete. So when I found this site several hours ago, I have searched and searched the site for the answer and as yet, still haven't found anything that seems to work for me.... I've opened iTunes on my PC, went to Lola's iPad, and clicked on Photos...picked a folder to sync and pressed apply. The photos go right over to the iPad, no problem. But, the next time i pick a folder to sync, it goes over to the iPad, but all the previous photo folders disappear. What happens to those folders? Do they go into my icloud, and if so, how can i find them? I did see a post that recommends creating a folder on my PC for pictures to sync with the iPad, then create subfolders, but what happens when I'm ready to sync more photos later? I feel like I should be able to figure this out (it's got to be something simple), but I'm giving up, and just asking for HELP! Thanks to whoever sees this and is good enough to write a response that I can understand.

OK, I'll have a go at this.

If I understand correctly, iCloud is used to push your photographs from one iDevice to all of your others. So if you have an iPhone, turning on Photostream on the iPad and iPhone will result in a photograph taken on the iPhone being available on the iPad with no further intervention from you.

So it appears that you can't access them "in the cloud" as there is no need to do so. You already have them on your iDevices.

Syncing is a different process, whereby you are transferring photographs from your PC/Mac to a single iDevice. Each time you sync, the complete album on your computer should end up on your iPad, with existing images being unchanged and any changes to the computer being added (or deleted). If you check the box on the photographs tab of your iPad in iTunes, the contents of the selected folder should transfer to your iPad.

This is correct, and what I have been doing: "Syncing is a different process, whereby you are transferring photographs from your PC/Mac to a single iDevice. Each time you sync, the complete album on your computer should end up on your iPad, with existing images being unchanged and any changes to the computer being added (or deleted). If you check the box on the photographs tab of your iPad in iTunes, the contents of the selected folder should transfer to your iPad." BUT...the next time I sync a photo folder from my PC, the previous one disappears and only the newly synced folder appears. What say you? Is there a setting somewhere that I'm not seeing?

So you are changing the folder in iTunes?

In that case the iPad is doing what it is supposed to do, and deleting the original pictures. You need to add the pictures to the folder that iTunes is using to sync, then it should keep the original ones, and just add the new ones.

If you change the folder in iTunes to a different one, that folder will no longer sync, and it's contents will be erased. In fact, this is how someone suggested deleting all photographs from an iPad; by syncing to an empty folder. (it didn't work, because photographs taken by the iPad camera or added to the camera roll are treated differently to those synced from a computer.)

My iPad is about to die. I'll get back to this thread when I've charged it up a bit, in case I've misunderstood anything.

OK...I just found this information on iTunes help: "You need to select all the folders that you want to sync to the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remain on the iPad, not including them in a subsequent sync is how you delete them from the iPad". The answer was posted to a question similar to mine but for iPad 3. Apparently the same thing happens on the iPad2 that has the updated iOS 5.1.1. I understand now. The post that talked about creating one folder for all the pictures you want makes more sense now. Whew!!!!! Thanks much KevinJS!!

No problem. Glad it worked. I don't use all of the features of the photos app so I was trying to apply a bit of logic to it.
