New Apple user with a Camera Connection Kit question

Hi, I am new to Apple products with the exception of an iPod.

My parents purchased me an iPad 2 for Christmas this year. I am really excited to receive it and get right to playing around with it. The only concern I have is that if I want to upload pictures to it from my digital camera, my memory card is an xD format. From what I understand, the Camera Connection Kit has both an SD card slot and a USB. But is this a standard usb? I have heard that Apple's are different.

Additionally, if I purchase a multi-card reader (that will read an xD card) and plug the usb of it into the CCK's usb port, will I be able to then access the images on my xD card and view and/or transfer them to my iPad 2 using this method - or am I just going to be unable to transfer pictures from this card? :ipad-back::confused:

You can plug your camera (USB) to the Camera Connection Kit (the USB piece). The multi card reader will most likely NOT work. Most do not.

I have just tried something for you and got it to work.

I Have an iPad2 running ios5. I have a cheap Chinese camera connection kit that incorporates both usb and SD in one connector. I grabbed an xD card out of my wife's camera and put it in a simple xD to USB adapter stick (only does xD) and plugged it in. The iPad identified the photos and displayed the thumbnails and then said the device was unsupported. I closed the error message and it imported the photos perfectly.

So with my setup it does work but I suspect this is just because of the actual devices that I used. YMMV. BTW I tried a normal multi card reader and a Compact Flash card from my camera and I couldn't get anything from that as I suspect the reader and the CF card drew too much current.

Hope this helps.

Compact card works with my non Apple camera card kit. Might be size dependant?

Sent from my iPad2 3G 32 gig (not JB'ed) / using iPF

Hi and welcome to the Forum. I have the camera connection kit and the USB is of normal size. I connect my digital camera with the cable supplied with the camera connected to the USB slot of the CCK. Works a dream

A quick update. I have just tried an old USB1.1 memory card reader and that works perfectly with the CF card. I didn't get an error message with this reader. Maybe because it is 1.1 or maybe the reader draws less power. It is therefore something that you need to experiment with to see if your card reader will work with the USB adapter.
