Yes! The charger is 10 watts and the USB port on your computer puts out much less power. Actually, you iPad is charging when you plug it into your computer, much much slower.

Sorry for the bump, but I missed this initially.

Has anyone else tried this Asus software?

This is Mr Sceptical talking, a piece of software that can up the very low output of my usb socket from somewhere near to 750 ma to 2 amps?

Not going to happen. BUT IT DOES!!

Try it. Instead of the 'not charging' icon, I get the normal battery with the lightening in it. I'm going to check properly but it looks like the usb is now charging the ipad at a decent rate!

If you are using a PC the guide makes clear - I just looked it up for the same reason - that only Macs charge through the USB port.

Hooked up to a PC the battery will slowly drain.

Well... This isn't entirely true. Many times I have hooked up my iPad to my computer to sync it up and just left it connected and lo and behold, when I come back several hours later, my iPad is back up to 100%! Obviously this is not the ideal way to charge an iPad, but it definitely will work!

"Important: The iPad battery may drain instead of charge if iPad is connected to a PC, to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, to a USB hub, or to the USB port on a keyboard. "
p.23 of the iPad User Guide

And that is what happens to my iPad.

Well then that's the difference! My power scheme only turns off the monitor, but never puts the CPU to sleep. I am using a plain old garden variety off the shelf Compaq desktop so I am not worried about conserving battery power so I just leave it on all the time.
