My inbox emails keep disappearing

I just got an iPad 2 and I have ios 6.0.1 on it. When I first bought it, it came with ios 6.

My main email account is a pop3 but there is no sync at all involved. Once it downloads onto my computer or ipad, it's downloaded onto those devices, no changes can be made. I only have 3 mailboxes in this account, inbox, sent, and delete so it's seems plain and simple.

At first it was once about two weeks that all of a sudden, all the inbox mailed would disappear spontaneously from my inbox folder. The first three times it happened, it was once every two weeks, now it's once a day or every other day and I can't live with this problem because my main reason to get the ipad 2 was for email, particularly this email account.

If I have not deleted my computer inbox messages, they are still on my computer but usually they have been deleted too by me so I've lost the emails. If I do have them on my computer, I can forward them to my ipad until the next time they disappear. It just shouldn't be happening. This never happened with my iPad 1.

I've called Apple and the iPad specialist didn't have a clue and said he had never heard of it before. He said that he would send it to the engineering department and I've not heard back. That was 5 days ago.

Also I do not use iCloud at all.

My gmail account has never done this but Hotmail has a few times. I can always retrieve the Hotmail by deleting and starting over, then it downloads whatever was in my inbox, but this is different, very different.

Can anyone help me please? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thank you much, Martha

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1, 16 gig

Hi Martha. This can sometimes happen where there has been a system update. Try this:
Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars and delete your mail server's account under Accounts. Then re-enter your ISP's mail account settings. (And of course the "Mail" slider should be set to ON)
Let us know how that went. Regards, Andrew

Thank you, Andrew. I had already done that twice. It made no difference. It had also done it with ios 6. It took me a couple of weeks to update my system from ios 6 to ios 6.0.1.

What I have done, though, is add that account back to my ipad 1 since it never happened on my ipad 1. Now I can compare.

Do you have any other ideas?

Martha :)

Hi Martha. Scraping the bottom of the barrel now re my knowledge of email operations as I only use the stock standard Mail app on my iPad with no problems. But you could try these, if you have not already done so:

** Is your g-mail configured as an exchange account? There is the option for email settings to sync up to a certain number of days. (default = 3 days) To change this, go Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars then tap on your Mail account and change "mail days to sync" to highest number of days. Still have slider to ON

** In Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendar, tap "Fetch New Data". "Push" slider should be set to ON.. And on the same screen go to Advanced and by your mail server's name tap "Fetch". Then make sure "Fetch" is checked.

** You re-entered the email Account. If you did this while connected to WiFi, try switching the router off, then delete and re-enter the Account again and then switch your WiFi back on.
I guess that's it. Someone with more of the gray cells may chip in with suggestions.
Regards, Andrew

It's not a gmail account. It's a small company in town's email address. It's a pop 3 account and there is no mail sync, no exchange, involved at all. Once it's downloaded onto my ipad, my mail server can't effect it at all, it's a done deal. This is coming from my ipad, not the server. For some reason my ipad thinks it's supposed to delete that email account every few days or more. It has also been happening with my Hotmail account too at the same time. It doesn't happen as often but when it does happen, it happens exactly at the same time. I have 3 email accounts on my ipad. So it happens with "zianet.com", my small email account very regularly, sometimes with Hotmail, never with gmail. Now with Hotmail, there is some sync but again once it's downloaded onto my ipad, if I delete mail on my computer Hotmail, it doesn't effect my ipad's email.

Thank you, Andrew, for all your suggestions. I do hope someone else can add something too!

UPDATE: After my mail disappeared again this morning, I called Apple and they had me restore my ipad and start over with it being like a new device. We hope this will help it but we shall see. -Martha

It's a fresh start with your iPad and should now not give you the same worries. Come back for sure if you have any more problems.

Unfortunately my email again just disappeared. I think a replacement ipad may be next in line, I'm not sure. I'll be notifying Apple.

Thanks all. Martha

In your email account settings, under Advanced, do you have this set this way:

Remove > Never

Delete from server > Never

If not, I suggest you try those settings.

I've used POP3 on iPad for nearing three years, and on iPhone before that, and haven't had probs with disappearing emails. Right now, the oldest email in one of my POP account's in box is just shy of a year old.

Yes, on both my ipads my settings are set to never to remove and never to delete from server. And my ipad 1 never loses mail, my ipad 2 does.
Thanks!

Help with lost email messages

I have been having the same issues. I have two pop3 email accounts and are both set up correctly. No issues at all on my iPhone, but on my gen 3 ipad every once in a while messages in my inbox just go missing. Seems to happen when starting a manual download of 100 plus messages (mostly spam!). And yes, I have settings at displaying 400 messages. This is incredibly frustrating and can't depend on the main function of this device.
So to be clear on the issue, it's a pop3 mail account (both of them), set to leave on the server after download, fetch was turned off but I'm trying it on now. This has happened multiple times and happened again last night. Started downloading about 120 messages and then all inbox messages older than about 3 days just disappear. Other times it was all messages that were gone.
I've been combing the forums for help. Seems like many have this problem, but no solutions. I'm going to meet with one of the apple 'geniuses' and see if they can help. I'll post any solutions.

I have been having this issue since I got my ipad at Christmas. I too have trauled the web looking for a solution and had found none. Actually it's quite simple. You have to go into settings, default account, and then select the account that the mails are disappearing from and as long as you haven't deleted them from the server on this account they will reappear in your inbox as if by magic! Ipad automatically selects your me account so if this is not the one you generally use then messages will disappear. The downside, if that's what to call it is that all sent messages will also go from this default account so it must be managed properly. Hope this helps all you other poor souls who've been having the same problem!

A simply solution is set up a gmail account and forward all mail to that account. First spam filter is the best and it works very efficiently
I have 5 different accounts and have minimum issues. I would never recommend hot mail to any user. On my devices I use mailbox as the email client again offers more features than mail. Hopefully ios7 will offer improvements for mail.

I have just had that problem and found that by going to settings and turning email off then on again a blank page appeared where emails should have been. A write message sign was at the top of the page so I sent myself an email and the emails came back. I believe my ipad already had IOS 7 on it.
