Reuters reports today that LG Electronics has abandoned its plans to launch an iPad-style tablet based on Google’s Android 2.2 operating system. LG, which had been hoping that the release of its own “iPad-killer” would come to the rescue of its loss-making handset division, according to Reuters, apparently made the decision after concluding that Android 2.2 is not what it's looking for to power its tablet, and that the company would rather wait for Android 3.0.

“We plan to introduce a tablet that runs on the most reliable Android version… we are in talks with Google to decide on the most suitable version for our tablet and that is not Froyo 2.2,” an LG official told Reuters.

As the report points out though, by delaying releasing its tablet, the South Korean company risks getting left behind when the imminent “iPad-killer” stampede occurs, and it’s possible that by the time LG is ready to release a tablet, it will have missed the boat.

Engadget, which also covers the story, adds that this is further evidence that Android 2.2 is not “mature enough” to power a tablet.
