Leverage find my iPad

So I know I can use several methods to find an idevice. Specifically having an idevice make a sound. What I am most interested in is the mechanisim the IOS uses. I am assuming it is iMessage and am looking for information on this is accomplished. Why you ask? I am involved in a project to manage a large number of iDevices and am looking to extend our management tool by being able to use a internal console to tell the device to make a sound instead of trying to use iCloud or other system. The device does this already, just trying to leverage from another tool.
