Ipad2 switches back to Home screen by itself

I have an ipad2 (one year old) and never had this problem before. When I am in a program, happily doing what I want, the ipad screen goes black and a second later changes back to the home screen. Today I have been working in Pages and it has done this at least 10 times. My daughter also has this problem sometimes with her ipad and also my son, with his iPod. The only thing we can think of is that it has happened since we upgraded to IOS6.
Can anyone shed some light on why it happens and what to do to stop it?

Can't shed light other than to say my iPad3 running 5.1.1 does this also, so might not be iPad2 or iOS 6 specific

Crashing to the home screen often indicates a low memory condition. Closing the apps in the multitask bar and rebooting may help.

Otherwise you could try Settings/General/Reset/reset all settings.

This is a bit drastic and means you will have to set up your iPad from scratch, although you won't lose any apps or data. Use it as a last resort, however.
