Since the latest update, my iPad1 crashes back to the home screen on a consistent basis. There is also a delay in typing. I never had a problem before the update. Anyone else having similar problems or anyone offering suggestions?

Hi and welcome to the Forum,

We had heard that there were fewer crashes for the iPad 1 when the latest update was first released, I'm wondering if the updates coming through for apps now might be causing problems as more ram may be required to run them. There are steps you can take to minimize this happening. Close apps completely when you have finished using them especially Safari, some sites use a lot of ram, clear out your history and cookies for Safari also and minimize your location services.

To close apps completely, from the home screen do the four finger swipe up or double press the home button to reveal your multi task bar. These are all the apps that you have opened at one time. Long press the app until it jiggles and a red minus sign will appear above it. Press the minus sign, this will close the app, not delete it, now press the home button to return to your screen. It's also a good idea to close all these apps, as it helps the iPad run smoothly, do this regularly, I have the iPad 2 and I do mine every night. To clear history and cookies go to Settings - Safari.

You should also restart your iPad occasionally. Press and hold the power off button, the one at the top right. You will see a slide appear to power off, slide this and the screen will go dark and a Whirly will appear. When the Whirly disappears your iPad is now off. Press the power button again until the Apple logo appears, this will take a few seconds and your iPad will restart.
Have a look to see if you still have a delay in typing, if so a reset is the next step.

A reset in this instance will not change anything on your iPad and is just like rebooting a computer. Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start.

All these steps are like a bit of housekeeping for your ipad to help it run smoothly. Hopefully this has now cleared your problems, let us know how you go.

I had the same problem. You might also might want to try is making sure the date and time are right on your iPad. I know that helped for me. Good luck!

Hi, I still have the problem. I'm ready to buy new iPad but also want to sell iPad1.
The problem came up at one point and occurs in ANY app! It seems that whilst I am active in the app (like bringing apps up to dat in app-shop) in works, but asa I have the slightest pause, it crashes (goes back to homepage).
I tries all the above. Also re-installed it completely.
Noticed now when I did most again that the multi task bar had a huge amount 25 ? apps open simultaneously !!!

But this was not the reason for the crashes - which persist :( !!

When you say re-installed it completely what do you mean? And you have done all of the above, as in closed all apps, emptied cookies and history in Safari, closed your location services and done a restart and reset?

You didn't open all those apps the 25 you speak about? That's unusual for them to appear if you have not opened them yourself. Something is not right here for that to happen.

Also go to Settings - Safari - Advanced - Website Data these are all the sites you have been to. Delete all these and see if this makes a difference. Check and make sure you have done all of the above and let us know how you go.

Leelai is giving great advice and I would emphasize one point and that is background apps.

25 icons in the background apps task bar will most certainly cause the iPad to appear sluggish and I believe unstable.

Be sure to close them all by tapping and holding one of the icons in the background apps task bar until it wobbles and a red minus sign appears on all icons. Tap the minus sign for each icon to clear the task bar. Once cleared restart your iPad and you should see improvement.
