You need an hdmi adapter for the iPad and a DVI to hdmi cable. That will work perfectly.

thank you, but why not go straight to a DVI connector? I bought one from Amazon and it does not work

There are only 2 adaptors you could use, the 30 Pin to VGA, or the above mentioned 30 Pin to HDMI. Older monitors use VGA, hence my initial question.
In the end, you would have to use either connection with a adaptor to convert to DVI.
There is no other type of cable available for video out (apart from older composite and component options).
