iPad photo format/resolution

I have a large photo library. Most of the photos are in jpg format 2560 x 1920 resolution and are over 2 MB each.

I would like to sync a lot of them to my iPad. I'm thinking it would be best to convert them to another format and reduce the resolution. What is the best format/resolution for photos on the iPad for the best quality image without wasting space?

Let iTunes do the conversions for you.
Just drag and drop copies into the folders you want as groups on the iPad and then in iTunes add the folders before syncing.
