Ipad onscreen keyboard

Why and how is my onscreen keyboard in the middle of the screen?
How do I correct this?

You've just encountered the new split and floating keyboard options that came with iOS 5. At the lower right of the keyboard you will see a key with an icon that looks a bit like a keyboard. Use this to drag the keyboard to the bottom of the screen. It will dock, and if split, rejoin.

If you tap and hold on the the key you can choose to put the keyboard in split or undocked mode, or re-dock it if it is already floating.

Placing two finger on the space bar and moving them apart or together will also split or rejoin the keyboard.
