iPad n00bs

Wifey just bought a new 3rd gen and I wanted to know how to get it to stream to the network at home, did the google search, found an answer or two, so here we are. She'll probably be the one asking the most questions on here, so be gentle.
Just bought a 2T WD Live Book to share pics and music... waiting for the brown truck.
Now I have to find the HDMI plug adapter and a it looks like that will stream to the Yamaha media unit, and another one for her kitchen TV.
So why can't I see this thing on my PC based wifi network?

The iPad is highly proprietary and as such is not browsable without some apps made specifically for that purpose. It does not appear on a home network like other windows based machines can do if configured properly.

You should however see it from the router interface as a wirelessly attached device.
